Homeschool Starter Kit for Beginners: What to Include
A beginner homeschool starter kit should include:
- a plain-language guide to your state's laws and first steps;
- a planner or workbook for your goals, schedule and records;
- one core curriculum for reading and math;
- a library card.
The Homeschool Starter Bundle (Guide + Workbook, $24.99) covers the first two.

The Free Part of Your Kit
You can assemble much of a starter kit for free, and we'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise:
- A library card — your most-used resource in year one: books, audiobooks, and often free passes to museums and parks.
- [HSLDA's state law page](https://hslda.org/legal) — the plain-language summary of what your state requires, free to read. (Our homeschool laws by state guide is a good companion.)
- [Khan Academy](https://www.khanacademy.org/) — free math practice (and more) that works well as a core-subject supplement while you decide on a full curriculum.
The Paid Part of Your Kit
- The Homeschool Starter Guide ($19) — the step-by-step plan for your first month: legal steps, choosing an approach, and your first week's rhythm.
- The Homeschool Workbook ($14) — the printable companion: goal pages, schedule planners, record-keeping sheets, and a fill-in withdrawal letter.
- The Starter Bundle ($24.99) — the Guide and Workbook together, which covers the first two items on the kit list.
For the third item — core curriculum — start with our guide to choosing a homeschool curriculum, and try samples before buying full-year sets.
